They both were diagnosed at the age of forty seven. So with the diagnosis of Ray’s lung cancer, at the age of forty seven, it was hard for him not to see his own death happening in the same way as his sister and father. Yet, this clash against cancer with faith was one that would not only prove to be successful, but would also bring Ray closer in his relationship with God. Refusing to Die, a Journey of Faith projects the determination and inner strength of Ray to live life to the fullest, sprouting from his childhood love of the outdoors growing up in New England and Boston.

His father’s death after an agonizing battle with lung cancer displayed to Ray the reality of death, but it wasn’t until he faced his possible death from cancer, a result of smoking and working with coal boilers, that Ray understood the preciousness and shortness of life. He details the journey he, his beloved wife Ginny and their two sons embarked on after his cancer diagnosis, coming together in prayer and confidence in Jesus as Ray underwent chemotherapy, radiation as well as an experimental clinical trial bone marrow transplant. Refusing to Die also describes the happier times for the family, especially experiencing the wonders related to the Medjugorje/Virgin Mary apparitions and vacations to Florida, Hawaii and Jerusalem. It was almost as though when Ray was presented death, he chose to live instead and placed his future in the capable, loving hands of Jesus.
